2013 is the Year of the へびhebi [snake]. We made a title page showing a New Year postcard with a hebi. We made curly wurly hebi to take home.
Okinawa 'hebi' are amazing! These woven snakes from the southern tropical island of Okinawa grip on to your finger & don't let go!
In Japan on February 3 we celebrate 節分Setsubun. We chased away an おに oni, throwing rice and shouting: おにはそと、ふくはうち! Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi! Bad luck go away, good luck come and stay! * Then we ate まめ mame, as many as our age, for Good Luck for the whole year. Mame are roasted soya beans - very crunchy. We thought they taste like popcorn.
*No sensei were harmed in the rice-throwing activity. Well, only a bit…
